Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition is an enhanced and optimized remake of the popular real-time strategy game first released in 1999.

Even though Age of Empires 2 is an iconic game that completely revolutionized the real-time strategy genre, that title is now over two decades old. Luckily, the development team over at Forgotten Empires decided that it was time to breathe fresh life into this classic game. Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition is a remastered version of the original title with improved graphics, a beautiful soundtrack, and new empires to play.

One of the reasons why Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition broke so many records is because they didn’t tamper with anything that made the original such a masterpiece. All of the controls and mechanics are nearly identical to the original release, and that means the game is going to feel very familiar. Just as with the original, each empire has its own unique campaign, and there are dozens of different battles and scenarios to play through.

As soon as you start your first campaign or match, you are immediately going to notice the revamped HD graphics. Everything from the waves to the movement of each unit has been remastered, and it feels as if the game is brand new. There are also a few mechanical improvements that make the game feel much more polished. That includes the ability to have your villagers automatically carry out tasks instead of constantly micromanaging them.

There have also been some major improvements to the armies themselves. The formations are now crisper and units have much better pathfinding abilities. Unfortunately, battles still turn into massive blobs of units that can’t be controlled, but that chaos was part of the reason why the original title was so popular. ‘

If you are a fan of competitive gameplay, then you will be glad to hear that Age of Empires 2: Definitive Edition can also be played on multiple online platforms against other players. Whether you want to engage in hectic head-to-head battles or would like to fend off some AI enemies with your friends, you can find it all in this game. Overall, it will be tough to find anything wrong with the Definitive Edition if you were a fan of the initial release of this game.
